The Greenhouse Opens at Hanze: A New Milestone for Entrepreneurship and Innovation within the BECEE Project

A significant step forward in strengthening entrepreneurship and innovation within higher education has been marked with the official opening of The Greenhouse at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.

The Greenhouse has been established as part of the BECEE Project (Boosting Entrepreneurial Ecosystems for Circular Economy and Education), an international initiative that brings together partners from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, and Albania. The project aims to foster entrepreneurial mindsets, support innovative ideas with societal impact, and create stronger connections between higher education, research, business, and society.

The initiative is supported through the EIT Higher Education Initiative (EIT HEI), funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. Through a grant exceeding €1.3 million, of which approximately €320,000 has been allocated to Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the consortium is creating new opportunities for students, academic staff, and aspiring entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions to contemporary societal challenges.

As the coordinator of the BECEE consortium, Hanze plays a leading role in promoting entrepreneurship across partner institutions. The Greenhouse will serve as a dedicated environment where ideas can evolve from early inspiration into practical and sustainable projects, addressing key challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, social innovation, and sustainable development.

The opening of The Greenhouse reflects Hanze’s long-term commitment to embedding entrepreneurship within education and empowering students and staff to become proactive innovators and change-makers. By providing access to mentoring, entrepreneurial support, networking opportunities, and innovation-focused activities, the new space is expected to become a catalyst for creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration.

An important foundation for the initiative is the doctoral research conducted by Jeroen Loef on entrepreneurial mindset development. His research contributes valuable insights into how entrepreneurial competencies can be cultivated within higher education environments and has helped shape the conceptual framework underpinning the BECEE project.

The Greenhouse represents more than a physical space; it embodies a vision of higher education where innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurial thinking are integrated into everyday learning and professional development. Through initiatives such as this, BECEE seeks to empower students and staff to transform ideas into impactful solutions that contribute to economic, social, and environmental progress.

The launch of The Greenhouse marks another important milestone for the BECEE Project and demonstrates the collective commitment of all consortium partners to building stronger entrepreneurial ecosystems across Europe.

BECEE is supported by the EIT Higher Education Initiative and EIT Food, funded by the European Union through the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
